Overview
Albert Whitmore Light Horse Memorial
Honouring a True Anzac Legend
Located in Barmera, South Australia, the Albert Whitmore Light Horse Memorial honours the extraordinary life and service of Albert “Bert” Whitmore (1899–2002)—the last surviving Australian Light Horseman and the last surviving South Australian veteran of World War I.
Unveiled after his passing, the memorial features a striking metal etching of a mounted Light Horseman, symbolising Bert’s enduring connection to one of Australia’s most iconic military units.
A Living Link to History
Albert Whitmore's service in the Australian Light Horse tied him directly to one of the most significant battles in Australian military history: the Battle of Beersheba, which took place on 31 October 1917. This was the site of the last great cavalry charge in military history, when Australian troops, under the command of General Sir Harry Chauvel, launched a daring and successful assault to capture the strategic desert town of Beersheba—crucial for its wells and position on the Ottoman defensive line.
Although the mission was considered nearly impossible by Britain's commander-in-chief Field Marshal Edmund Allenby, Australian Light Horsemen achieved a stunning victory, charging under heavy fire and overrunning Turkish and German defences before enemy artillery could respond.
A Remarkable Farewell
Bert Whitmore passed away in October 2002 at the age of 103. Fittingly, his funeral service was held on 31 October 2002, exactly 85 years after the Battle of Beersheba—a powerful tribute to his life and legacy.
