Martin Bend Wetland and Walking Trail
Overview
Discover the beauty of Berri’s riverfront and wetlands on the Lion Allan Thurmer Recreational Trail, a scenic loop walk located in Martin Bend Reserve.
This family-friendly trail is around 3 km long and takes about an hour to complete. Starting near the Berri Marina and extending through to Martin Bend, the path winds past Murray River floodplains, tranquil lagoons, and shady river red gums. Along the way you’ll spot an abundance of birdlife—over 60 species have been recorded here—and enjoy peaceful water views, with plenty of benches for rest and reflection. Interpretive signs provide insight into the area’s rich natural environment and history.
Originally called the Wetland Walking Trail, the path was renamed in 2012 to honour Allan Thurmer, a dedicated community volunteer who first championed the trail in the 1970s. Under his guidance, the walk was extended and improved, eventually becoming the much-loved loop enjoyed today.
The trail also links with the Berri Historic Riverfront Walk, where you can explore cultural landmarks, riverside murals, and monuments. Meanwhile, Martin Bend Reserve offers picnic and BBQ facilities, camping, toilets, and a popular swimming beach—making it an ideal place to spend the day.
Whether you’re after a leisurely stroll, a dose of nature, or a chance to connect with Berri’s heritage, the Lion Allan Thurmer Recreational Trail is a must-do experience in the Riverland.
