Barmera Great War Horses Memorial (Horse Trough)
Overview
Barmera Great War Horses Memorial (Horse Trough)
Honouring the Unsung Heroes of the Great War
Standing proudly at the head of Barwell Avenue in Barmera, the Great War Horses Memorial—affectionately known as the Horse Trough—is a unique and heartfelt tribute to the thousands of Australian horses that served during World War I.
Unveiled on 30 November 1935 by Colonel Ross Jacob of the Returned Soldiers’ League, the memorial was built to commemorate the strength, loyalty, and sacrifice of war horses who played a vital role alongside Australian troops. These animals endured extreme conditions and hardship, transporting supplies, pulling artillery, and carrying soldiers across battlefields. Yet sadly, very few returned home.
Crafted from locally sourced freestone and topped with a polished marble plaque, the memorial is both functional and symbolic. The inscription reads:
“To commemorate the splendid work of the Australian horses in the Great War.”
A Living Legacy
In 2000, local school children joined in a rededication ceremony to mark Remembrance Day, ensuring that the story of these war horses continues to be shared with future generations. The memorial stands today not just as a historical marker, but as a living symbol of remembrance and community pride.
It is believed to be one of the only memorials in Australia dedicated solely to war horses, making it a rare and significant site in the nation’s commemorative landscape.
